- Runs, lights up, turntable spins — but the food stays cold. The classic magnetron or high-voltage circuit failure. The control side is fine; the part that actually generates microwaves is not.
- Loud buzzing or humming when it starts. High-voltage transformer or a failing magnetron drawing badly.
- Sparking or arcing inside the cavity. Usually the waveguide cover burnt through, or the cavity paint worn back to bare metal. Stop using it — arcing damages the magnetron quickly.
- Completely dead, no display. Blown line fuse, and the fuse blew for a reason — most often a failed door interlock switch. Replacing only the fuse is how the same fault comes back the same week.
- Turntable does not rotate. Drive motor, coupler or a broken roller ring. Cheap and quick.
- Door will not latch, or it runs with the door ajar. Interlock switch assembly. This is a safety fault, not a convenience one.
- Touch panel unresponsive or ghost-pressing. Membrane keypad or control board.
- Grill or convection not working on a combi model. Grill element, convection fan motor or the relay driving them — the microwave side can be perfectly healthy.
Types we work on
Call now- Countertop microwaves — solo, grill and convection models.
- Built-in microwaves — trim-kit installations in fitted kitchens, including removal and refitting.
- Over-the-range / combination units — microwave plus extractor hood, where the hood fan and lamp are common failures in their own right.
Being straight with you about cost
Call nowMicrowaves are the one appliance where repair is frequently not the right answer, and we would rather say so on this page than after taking a call-out fee.
A magnetron plus the labour to fit it can approach the price of a new mid-range countertop microwave. On a basic solo model, replacing the unit is usually the better financial decision, and we will tell you that on site. Where repair clearly does make sense:
- Built-in and combination models, where the appliance is fitted to the kitchen and replacement means matching a trim kit or rebuilding a cabinet.
- Door, latch, turntable, lamp, keypad and fuse faults — inexpensive parts on any model.
- Grill and convection faults on combi ovens, where the expensive microwave section is undamaged.
Why we do not "just replace the fuse"
Call nowA microwave line fuse is a protective device, not a wear part. When it blows, something made it blow — most commonly a door interlock switch that has failed short, which is precisely the component that stops the oven radiating with the door open. Fitting a new fuse without testing the interlock chain puts the appliance back into service with its primary safety system defeated. We test the interlocks every time.
Safety
Call nowA microwave's high-voltage capacitor holds a dangerous charge after the appliance is unplugged. This is genuinely not a DIY repair, and it is the reason we discharge the capacitor as the first step of any internal work. If your microwave is arcing, running with the door open, or has a damaged door seal, stop using it and call us.

Is it worth repairing a microwave at all?
For a built-in, combination or higher-end model, usually yes. For a basic countertop unit needing a magnetron, usually no. We will give you the actual numbers on site and let you decide.
Why does my microwave spark when I run it?
Most often the waveguide cover — a small mica panel inside the cavity — has absorbed grease and burnt through. It is an inexpensive part. Metal trim on dishes and foil will also arc, so check what you are heating before assuming a fault.
Can you repair the microwave in my built-in oven tower?
Yes. We can withdraw a built-in unit from its housing and refit it afterwards. Tell us the make and model when you book so the technician arrives prepared.
The inside paint is flaking. Can that be fixed?
Cavity paint can be refinished with the correct microwave-safe coating, but if the metal beneath has corroded through, the appliance is finished. We will show you which one you have.
Do you repair the extractor hood on an over-the-range unit?
Yes — hood fan motors, lamps and grease-filter housings are among the most common faults on those models, and they are unrelated to the microwave section.
